Hugh is originally from Aspertia City, a small city situated in southwestern Unova. The firstborn to a childcare specialist and a martial artist, he was a quiet boy whom spent a vast amount of his time with his grandfather, a retired Pokémon Trainer, learning about raising and training Pokémon from an early age. Much to his father's displeasure, he showed very little interest in inheriting the family dojo. Instead, he dreamed of one day becoming a skilled Pokémon Trainer, traveling from region to region and gathering all the badges he could.
For the first few years of his life, Hugh was an only child. This was to remain the same until his parents decided they wanted to have another child, especially since Hugh seemed to have trouble making friends. When his younger sister was born, he immediately took on the role of an doting older brother. From the time she could walk, Hugh was always there to catch his sister when she fell and cheer her up whenever she was down. There wasn't a thing he wouldn't do for her and it wasn't completely wrong to say she knew that she was spoiled by her brother.
When their grandfather brought home an assortment of Pokémon to gift to Hugh, including a Trapinch, Pidove and a Purrloin, he chose to give the Purrloin to his sister for her birthday. Shortly after, they went outside to train their newly obtained Pokémon together when a couple of members of Team Plasma approached and attacked them, stealing his sister's Purrloin before he was able to fend them off. The devastation on his sister's face angered him to no end and he swore revenge of Team Plasma at all costs. As the years passed, Hugh spent every moment he could attempting to grow stronger with his Pokémon while still making room for his sister and friends.
The opportunity to finally leave Aspertia City came when his best friend, Nate, was offered the chance to receive one of Unova's starter Pokémon. Having raised one himself in an egg, he knew it was now or never to get the revenge he so desperately wanted. Traveling and growing stronger at about the same pace as Nate, he breezed through the Gyms one by one, urging his friend to become stronger in order to aid his cause. Although he encountered Team Plasma several places during his journey, each defeat proved to be more and more infuriating when he came out empty-handed. How was he going to explain to his little sister that he couldn't find Purrloin, when he'd promised her that he'd get it back?
He refused to go home without Purrloin at his side, so he continued training, his Pokémon and he growing strong with each passing day. Just when his rotten luck would never cease, he learned that it was the dreaded Shadow Triad that now had possession of Purrloin. With Nate by his side, he was able to defeat them and get Purrloin - only, she was on longer the adorable little Purrlon he remembered her to be, but an angry and aggressive Liepard that attacked him the moment he went to reunite her. It certainly wasn't the picture perfect moment Hugh had been anticipating all those years, but he was simply glad to have accomplished his goal.
Grateful to Nate, he reluctantly returned home to give Liepard to his little sister. She was absolutely delighted to have her Pokémon back and didn't seem to mind that she couldn't yet release her from her Poké Ball. Instead, she listened to her brother and has been working on taming Liepard since that day. Gradually, the cat-like Pokémon has come around, at least to his sister, though remains aggressive towards anyone else. Hugh now spends much of his time at home, making up for lost time with his sister and helping her with Liepard.
He plans on challenging the Pokémon League sooner or later. For now, he's more than content to relax back at home and casually train his team.
Hugh sports a fairly unusual hairstyle which is far beyond his control and it's been the same for as long as he can remember. His spiky navy locks somehow match quaintly with his red eyes, giving him a rather dark appearance. He stands at a height of 5'8" and weighs approximately 130 lbs, give or take a few pounds.
