Rui Makeru
Male | 17 | Trainer
Personality: Rui is a strong battler and cares for his Pokémon above all else. He spends most of his free time supervising his Pokémon's training. Despite his strength he actually dislikes battling other trainers and would rather just watch others battle and travel around. Though he is always fully prepared to defend himself or others from wild Pokémon or other dangers. He values speed and his Pokémon being able to think for themselves, so he often pits his Pokémon against each other to train, having them battle without instruction (though occasionally throws out a tip or pointer).
Outside of battle and training Rui is very friendly and laid back. He enjoys a good conversation with a stranger and helping out with anything he can. Generally he is hard to annoy, but he has a strong sense of morals and is often overstepping his bounds when it comes to stopping something he feels is unjust. He is very close with his Pokémon and they are very loyal to him.
Backstory: Growing up in Vermillion of Kanto, Rui had always wanted to be a Pokémon Trainer, ever since he was very small. His mother was a skilled trainer until she lost all but one of her Pokémon in an accident. She wasn't quite the same after that, but taught Rui all she knew about battling. A rampaging onix during a training session in a cave ended her life in a cave in. Rui only escaped with the help of his sandshrew and pidgey.
He was just ten years old at the time, but it did not deter his dream of becoming a trainer. It did, however, set his father vehemently against it. Rui's father did everything he could to stop Rui, even getting rid of Rui's sandshrew and pidgey a few times (but they always found their way back to Rui's house). Finally when Rui was thirteen he left in the middle of the night without a word to his father; a decision he does not regret, but still feels guilt for. He traveled through Johto (because staying in Kanto would run the risk of running into his father) and collected the eight badges.
He declined to challenge the Pokémon League and instead returned home at age 15, intending to apologize and make peace with his father. Unfortunately his father refused to even see him, let alone forgive him. So Rui, quite troubled by this, returned to a life of wandering and traveled to the other regions to explore, trying to take his mind off of his father.
Appearance: Rui is a fairly tall and skinny kid, standing at about 5'7". He usually wears red sneakers, blue jeans, and a blue zip-up jacket. His eyes are green and his hair is dark brown, though it is usually covered by a blue and white beanie with a Pokéball symbol on one side. He usually carries a dark grey backpack with his gear.
Pokémon:
Sabaku
Sandslash | Male
Sabaku was Rui's first Pokémon. He was caught for him by his mother when he was eight years old, and they've been inseparable ever since. He is the strongest and most dominant Pokémon of the team and acts as the leader in Rui's absence. He is generally pretty serious, but occasionally has a playful side. He enjoys the company of all of his teammates and acts as a mediator if there are conflicts. He has a few scars on his left ear.
Otto
Pidgeot | Male
Otto was the first Pokémon that Rui caught on his own. His mother guided him in the capture and named him shortly before she died. He was happy to join Rui's team because he was impressed by Sabaku's battle prowess and wanted to someday defeat him in battle (a feat he has yet to accomplish). Despite this rivalry they are very close friends. Otto is very calm and is quite good at quick thinking and coming up with battle plans in an instant. His favorite thing to do is take long flights in sunny weather.
Sionpo
Golduck | Male
Rui didn't actually want Sionpo on his team when he got him. As a psyduck Sionpo was a runt and was always picked on by the other psyduck in his home. He hated his life and always wanted to get away, but was too scared to leave. He saw Rui passing through one day and became jealous of how happy his Pokémon looked with him. So he worked up his courage and started following Rui. Rui tried to shoo him away, but the psyduck was not deterred. Eventually Rui relented, slightly impressed with the Pokémon's persistence, and allowed him to join the team. This proved to be a good decision, for when Sionpo evolved into a golduck his power and intelligence increased and he became a strong asset to the team, though he is still a bit gullible. After evolving he gained a bit of an ego and likes showing off to other Pokémon.
Rico
Machamp | Male
Rui caught Rico as a machop, and he has always been very eager to learn and become stronger. As a machop he would often get into tussles with the other Pokémon, but once he evolved into a machoke he became more serious and better behaved. For a while he left Rui's team to go train in the mountains with a martial arts expert, but eventually found his way back and evolved into a machamp shortly after. He is extremely modest and shy around strangers, but once in a battle he will do anything to win for his team. He has an extreme soft spot for baby Pokémon and when around them will shyly hint at wanting to hold them. He is very gentle outside of battle and prefers to watch the other Pokémon play than join in. He also wears a red bandana on his lower left arm.
Koden
Houndoom | Male
Koden is an extremely serious Pokémon. He was already a houndoom when Rui first found him with a terrible injury to his left eye in the forest. He wanted nothing to do with Rui at first, but eventually allowed Rui to treat his injury, as he realized it wasn't going to get better on its own. Rui was unable to save the eyesight in the eye, and he still bears terrible scarring. Koden reluctantly joined Rui's team, unable to shake the feeling of owing the trainer for helping him. He is extremely prideful and refuses to accept defeat. Even in training he gives it his all, and Rui has, on more than one occasion, needed to recall him before he's seriously injured one of his other Pokémon. He is extremely loyal to Rui, but does not get along well with the others on the team.
Skree
Jolteon | Male
Skree is an interesting Pokémon. Extremely timid and gentle, he does not appear to be suited for battling. However once he enters the fray, it's like he becomes a different Pokémon. He snaps and becomes angry and serious, giving the battle his all. Rui prides him as one of his most powerful Pokémon. He is extremely loyal and would do absolutely anything to protect his team and trainer, even when he's scared. Courage is one thing this Pokémon does not lack when it really counts.
