Personality: No one is without flaw. Rin, however, ended up with the short end of the stick and has more than most.
Socialization does not come easily for Rin, and the most she contributes to a conversation is affirmative grunts and one-word responses. As a general rule, she steers clear of interaction and avoids heavily populated areas. When her route demands that she pass through bustling cities, she skirts the high-rise buildings at night, when the streets are deserted and lit only by lamplight. It's not so much that she fears inquisitive eyes; the morbid curiosity of the human race irritates her to no end, and she would rather do without it than face it head-on.
When Rin is forced into an uncomfortable situation, words are her best and only defense. She's quick to fire off with her barbed tongue should anyone come near, adopting an aloof attitude with those who succumb to her venom. If all else fails, she is not above using her fists to get her tormentor to back off, but that is her last resort. Argumentative and opinionated, she has a hair-pin trigger and is known to launch into passionate rants if her actions or beliefs are questioned. It takes a long time for her to cool off, and a good amount of the time she has to stalk off before she does something she will inevitably regret.
Rin does have some redeeming qualities, although they are rarely showcased. For one, she is extremely protective of those whom she cares about (though in normal circumstances she's hard-pressed to show the person that she cares). Like her father, she is a talented battler, preferring strategy over brute strength, which is reflected in her choice of a team. More than anything, however, Rin is reliable and the one person you can count on when the rest of the world has fallen to pieces.
Backstory: Rin was born and raised in Sinnoh in the family-friendly Hearthome City. While never a social butterfly, she was not nearly as cynical and had a small group of friends with whom she was very close. She was exposed at an early age to Pokémon battling, her father having been a skilled, experienced trainer. He pushed her to follow in his footsteps, to her mother's chagrin. But Rin was deaf to her mother's protests and was understandably excited to undertake her journey when she was of age.
Disaster struck mere days before she was to leave home. It was allegedly an accident, although to this day Rin has her doubts. The official story was that there was a short in the wiring that caught fire, and the house was blazing soon enough. She remembers little of what happened, aside from standing outside the inferno in extraordinary pain. Rin and her father (her mother, thankfully, had been out) were rushed to the hospital. Her father died in the ambulance, and while Rin survived, she was not without scars. A good portion of the right side of her face had been burnt, and the Sato family was unable to afford plastic surgery to fix the aesthetic damages.
For a while, Rin isolated herself from the world, mourning the loss of her father and all of his beloved Pokémon. She resurfaced once in a four-month period to ask her mother if she could leave on her journey; her request was refused, which sent her back into depression. She may have remained in that room for an additional six months had not not been for Zola, her father's Mismagius. She had been assumed deceased, but in reality had disappeared for a time.
Her return infused Rin with a new hope. For another month, she squirreled away provisions for her journey, fearing the lengths her mother might go to keep her there should she be caught. It was a tiring and nerve-wracking process, but the results were worth it. One day, Rin was simply ready, and there was no further delay. She slipped out in the dead of night and never looked back.
Now, she has fled to the Johto region, Zola her only companion. What awaits a runaway with little experience but enough passion to overcome her obstacles?
Appearance: Rin is of medium height, standing at 5'6". She's slight and thin-boned, with lean muscle that is further toned by walking throughout Johto and sharp features. Her hair, dark and straight, hangs past her shoulders and is kept down. However, a good deal of her hairline was burned off in the fire on the right side, and rather than wear a wig she is never seen without a cap of some kind. The entire right side of her face is burnt and scarred, hense her aversion to crowds and largely populated cities. Her attire generally consists of baggy, neutral-colored sweatshirts, jeans, and her trusty pair of steel-toe hiking boots.
Pok?mon:
ZOLA : F | Modest | Thoroughly cunning
Zola was, at one time, Rin's father's Pok?mon. She was never the star member of the team, and resented being shoved to the back burner in important battles. After his death, she tried her hand (if she had any) at living in the wild once again, but she missed human companionship, and her efforts to find a new trainer were in vain. So she returned, and in Rin she saw an opportunity to be needed and, in time, loved. While their relationship can be rocky at times - with both parties frustrated over Rin's inexperience in Pok?mon training - Zola and Rin have only each other for company...and for once, this Mismagius' cries are imbued with happiness, not pain.
