Personality:
Morty is, on the outside, a rather reclusive person. He isn't to fond or interested in making new friends. Actually, he couldn't care either way as to what a person that he meets becomes. If they end up his friend, then okay. If they end up as nothing significant, then oh well. He feels that he has enough friends and acquaintances now to last for quiet some time, so why go out of the way to make more?
Morty also has an air of mystery about him. As he's not a very open person, and prefers to keep a lot of details about his past hidden. Those closer to him know more than the general population. His mysterious and sometimes weird ways nearly always succeed in doing one of two things to people he meets. The first option is that they are scared away them from Morty and his ghost types. The second option is that they intrigued by him and attempt to find out more. Of course, there's always the third option of a person being indifferent.
The gym leader of Ecruteak also has a bit of an arrogant streak in him. Loses generally come as a surprise to him. He's not a sore loser though. After the initial shock is over, Morty can generally accept his defeat pretty well. Unless you've caught him on one of his off days. In the event that that happens, he tends to mope around a bit. This is especially true if the battle is either really close and a stupid mistake was made on his part, or if the battle was extremely one sided and there was no chance that he was even going to come close to winning. He's not necessarily grumpy when he's moping about, he's just a downer to talk to. As previously mentioned though, this doesn't happen to often.
Aside from that, Morty really appreciates the quiet side of life. Picking a quiet spot and reading is one of his favorite activities, which is generally what he occupies himself with when waiting for challengers at the gym. He's a pretty big thinker as well and enjoys getting into deep discussions with others. Morty is more than content to sit and ponder things on his own though.
When it comes to humor, Morty's is pretty witty. He's a quick thinker and comebacks are his specialty. Secretly, he's not above joking around and pulling a prank or two. After all, he specializes in ghost types, who are notoriously tricksters. Most of these pranks and jokes are generally kept to the trainers that work at the gym and even then they're just small tricks.
Morty does enjoy the company of other people on occasion, especially when those people are people he knows. If the conversation is interesting enough, he can talk for quite a bit of time. In the rare circumstance that he gets off on a tangent, then be prepared for hearing lots of his thoughts and opinions.
Patient could be another word used to describe Morty. He's the type of person that is willing to wait for something he wants. He's also got the persistence and work ethic to take the long road and work towards his goals. Because of this, he's rarely one to be outwardly angry. Sure, he'll curse your very being inside his head, but outside Morty will still be as cool as a cucumber, to a certain point. There are certain things that he just can't stand that tend to drive him past that point, certain buttons to be pushed. For the most part though, they are very odd things that no one would even have a chance at guessing.
He's rather good at putting up a facade of being absolutely okay as well. This is partially because his anger is rarely expressed outwardly. His facade of indifference also helps cover-up the frequent headaches he gets from his visions and connections with spirits. For the most part, he's learned to ignore or block out the small and unimportant ones, but they do still get overwhelming at times. On particularly bad days, he'll close up the gym and just lay around at his house, keeping things as quiet and simple as possible. In the past he's tried going to work on the days like these, but it has always ended in a very grumpy and almost intolerable Morty. After the first few times, he decided that it was best for him, his co-workers, and any trainer that challenges him if he just stayed home. Very few people, other than the higher ranking trainers at the gym, actually know about this. He chooses to keep it a very well kept secret.
While he does enjoy having time to himself, there are also times when he craves human attention and interaction. Unfortunately for him, those bouts of wanting usually come when none of his friends are in town. He's found people to substitute in if that ever happens, but they aren't nearly as good as the people he considers his actual friends.
Backstory:
Morty had always been a rather odd child. He grew up a single child with both of his parents working most of the time. Instead of seeking out friends or other relatives to fill the void let by two parents who were employed full time, he chose to stay by himself. Because of this, he became a very independent thinker at a young age. Often times he would find himself questioning things that others didn't. Unintentionally, this led to him distancing himself from others around his age. Eventually, his parents took notice of this and tried to encourage Morty to spend more time with actual people, not just at home with only his books and thoughts. To a degree, the attempts worked. He found himself interacting with other people his age, but he was always no the outside of the circle.
His interest in Pokémon, or more specifically ghost types, came directly from the kids he was near forced to hang out with. One of the kids in the group was having a sleep over for their birthday party and everyone decided to start telling ghost stories. Unlike nearly everyone else there, Morty was far from afraid of the Pokémon in the stories. It was quite the opposite of that actually. He soon found himself more and more interested in the Pokémon that reminded him so much of himself.
Throughout his early teens, Morty remained a rather detached person. He his social circle actually grew smaller as his friends from his childhood grew more and more critical of those different from societal norms. Every occasional insult that he got while he was still young he took to heart, making him less trusting of people around him. In the end, he managed to work through this time of his life successfully.
Around the age fourteen, Morty encountered his first ghost type Pokémon, which he had been doing reading about and doing research on ever since he found out about the fascinating little things. The Pokémon in question happened to be a Gastly that the trainers at the local gym had no clue what to do with. Luckily for him and the Gastly, which now happens to be a Gengar, he happened to be walking by when they were discussing it. It wasn't long after he came into the possession of his Gastly that Morty decided what he wanted to do with his life. Much to his parents and nearly everyone else who knew him's surprise, he left on a journey to learn more about Pokémon, specifically ghost types and the legendaries that roamed the region.
After more than three years of exploring nearly all of Johto and some of Kanto, Morty returned home. Not even days after he became a trainer the gym in Ecruteak. Almost immediately the other trainers in the gym and those challenging the gym noticed the proficiency that he had with ghost types. Some argued that he was better than the actual gym leader. After a month or so of talk, he was promoted to leader.
Early on in his run as gym leader, Morty met and befriended a man by the name of Eusine. Over the course of time, the two have grown to be rather good friends. Whenever Eusine ends up in Ecruteak the two nearly always end up spending time together. Even though they spend much of their time apart, they do still have a rather tight bond.
More recently than not, Morty has grown rather interested in the legendary Pokémon that are associated with the towers in Ecruteak. When he isn't found in his gym, either of the towers are normally where he can be found.
Morty's social circle has grown considerably since he became gym leader. He considers himself to be on friendly terms with all of the gym leaders in Johto as well as some in Kanto. Aside from that, he also knows some of the Elite Four members as well. He's also on decent ground with the Kimono girls as well, considering they reside in the same city. He also remain rather close friends with Eusine. If he would have to narrow down his fellow gym leaders to who he's closest to, the answer would probably be Whitney, Falkner, and Jasmine. Some twist of events has led him to be a bit closer with these three, more so then any of the other gym leaders. He honestly has no clue what it was or why.

[X]Morty could be considered of average build for his age. He stands at around 5'10. His somewhat long blonde hair is held back by a purple headband. He has rather pale skin from hours of staying inside the darkness of his gym.
