Nicknames: N will allow Pokémon to call him by whatever name they wish. Most notably, his Zoroark frequently refers to him as Nat. His full name is in fact Natural, but he does not share this with very many.
Personality: Over the past two years since N's defeat, a lot has changed in him. He is notably happier and friendlier than he was in the past, and a more lighthearted side of him can be seen under the right circumstances. After much thought and a better look at the world during a journey with Reshiram, he reevaluated his views; most importantly the relationship between people and Pokémon.
While he has always been kindhearted and motivated by only the best of intentions, his older misguided perception of the world turned this characteristic against him, which resulted in him looking down on humanity. He once regarded himself in a place above the rest of them because of the belief that they only brought ruin and harm upon themselves and Pokémon. However, he has since become humbler following the realization that everything he had thought to be truth was wrong. He struggled to come to terms with this, but it was something he was prepared to accept by the time he was beaten by Zekrom and Black.
N does feel occasionally guilty about his past actions, but he typically doesn't dwell on this or feel sorry for himself and takes full responsibility for them. He is focused on moving ahead and making amends, as well as finding a new place in the world where he can use his skills to help Pokémon and trainers.
N's friends are very dear to him, and they will always be his first priority. He considers all Pokémon of the world to be his friends, and is determined to do whatever is best for them and makes them the happiest. He feels more attatched to them than he does with most people, and his ability to understand their speech brings him closer on another level. He is unforgiving towards those who intentionally harm Pokémon and disgusted by anyone who considers them expendable tools. There is no easier way to make him furious than by hurting one of his friends, and he will tolerate any type of abuse towards them under absolutely no circumstances.
In recent years, N has also gained human friends that he regards as equally important to his Pokémon friends. Though very few in number, as he still has issues connecting and getting along with many people to the point of considering it a friendship, they have come to mean a great deal to him.
He is a very intelligent person, albeit socially inept. N is oblivious to many of the norms of society since he grew up isolated from it, so he will often appear strange and quirky in his speech and actions. He may sometimes come off rude, as well, for this reason. N is blunt, honest, and unafraid to speak his mind. When he is in a bad mood, this rudeness may be the result of a haughty, leftover bit of arrogance in him, but most of the time it is because he simply doesn't realize he has said something considered inappropriate. (Although he is definitely not a slow learner.)
In addition, some of his behaviors are distinctly animal-like and odd to the average person, which were acquired from growing up with Pokémon as almost his sole company. While these behaviors are usually on the subtle side, they become more apparent the closer he becomes with someone. Such things may include quiet growling, an awkward physical closeness, etc.
Despite his occasional disregard for others' personal space, he is unaccustomed to being touched in return, be it a hand on the shoulder or a hug. N will react awkwardly to these types of gestures or even flinch as a reflexive reaction, but can learn to grow used to it for certain people he comes to expect it from and is comfortable with. Due to the fact Pokémon express a lot through their body language and closeness with one another, these things can actually translate quite a lot for him regarding his relationship with someone.
N is also a very curious person, and becomes frustrated when there is something he doesn't understand. He enjoys learning as much as he can on just about any subject, (particularly mathematics, which he already excels at,) and has the tendency to ramble about these things without noticing or caring that someone isn't following him or interested. His speech is very quick paced, and it frequently doesn't occur to him that the one he is speaking to may not be keeping up unless they specifically ask him to slow down. He goes faster the more emotional or riled up he becomes.
He is both extremely stubborn and passionate about issues he deems important, and this is both a strength of his, and a potential fault as demonstrated in things past. Very little can sway him from a goal or task he's set his mind to, although he may take in the considerations and opinions of those who are friends to him. He's still prone to mood swings and immature reactions given the right conditions, but it has been considerably toned down compared to years back. Though he has improved, on occasion he can still become condescending, cocky, or even pouty if he grows irritated enough. He is still a complicated and somewhat difficult person to get along with, but he does deeply value those who manage to.
Backstory: When N was a child, he frightened and upset those around him with behaviors suggesting that he could communicate with Pokémon. For this reason, he was abandoned by his parents in the woods. He has no strong memory of them, or even what they may have looked like; he only remembers that he was alone until a group of wild Pokémon came along. They adopted and cared for him, so he came to recognize them as his family.
He lived with these Pokémon until the day he was approached by Ghetsis, who claimed to be his father. Though cautious and reluctant about coming with the man at first, he was told that if he did there would be great things he could accomplish to help his Pokémon friends--and children are easily fooled. As soon as he agreed to join him, N unknowingly became his pawn.
N was molded and groomed to become exactly what his 'new father' wanted him to be, and the man took extra precautions in making sure that everything went according to plan. N was isolated from all human contact save from Ghetsis himself and a few of the other adopted children, such as Anthea and Concordia. He was kept away from society, and so only saw and learned what his 'father' allowed him to.
Ghetsis brought countless abused and injured Pokémon to N, some that were so distrusting and terrified of humans that they refused to talk to him. Most of these Pokémon's sufferings were Plasma's own doing, but N was told that this was how humans regularly treated them, and that people forced their Pokémon to fight one another. Sometimes, there were even a few poor souls that were beyond any help and died. Horrified and scarred by these sights, as well as all the stories he heard both from Ghetsis and the wounded Pokémon, he grew to despise trainers and battling. The idea to separate humans and Pokémon completely was a seed planted in his mind very early on and given time to grow so that he would become only more determined as years went by.
Of course, every now and then a flicker of doubt would surface, but to voice this was a mistake. Ghetsis was gentle on N during the first few years living under him so that the boy would trust him, but he became harsher as time went on. Verbal abuse became frequent if N ever started to question what they were doing, and though less often utilized, Ghetsis wasn't beyond physical punishment, either. N was told it was all for his own good and became deluded into believing it helped him, despite protests from some of his Pokémon friends that it was not OK. N cared more for his purpose than himself, so he found a way to excuse it each time. Deep down, he may have always been conflicted concerning Ghetsis' treatment, but at the time it didn't matter as long as he could achieve his goal.
On his eighteenth birthday, he was officially declared "king" of Team Plasma, and that is when he started laying down more specific plans to reach their goals, centered around his role of becoming Reshiram's hero. By the age of nineteen, they were ready to approach the public with these matters. That was when he met Black.
He was shocked that the boy and his Pokémon shared a meaningful relationship with each other, but wrote it off as an anomaly after their first meeting. Over time however, the more he observed trainers, Black and his friends most of all, he began to doubt again and hated himself for it. This frustration made him push harder in attempting to accomplish his dream of liberating Pokémon, to prove to himself that he was still indeed right. He suppressed the feeling that he may be wrong, but it grew at an alarming rate.
Befriending Reshiram gave him the determination he needed to follow through to a final test of will, but he ultimately failed. By the time it had finally ended, he surprised himself with how accepting he felt about his loss. If Pokémon were clearly happier with people, then he didn't mind changing his views to fit this newly discovered truth. Upon his defeat, he decided to set off and explore the world, but found a strange sadness in leaving behind Black. They were not quite friends, no, but the boy had changed something in him for better, and he felt they had developed a meaningful connection.
When Ghetsis revealed Plasma's true intentions to N, he had lost the person he had trusted the most, and so Black automatically became the new individual in that position. In that moment, Black was the only human in the world N undoubtedly felt he could trust, but he knew they must part despite this. While he was away, N thought of the boy frequently to fuel his new found faith in humanity, and found himself growing even more fond of him while they were apart.
He returned to Unova two years later after catching wind that there was trouble in the region. Black was nowhere to be found, and N instead met a younger boy facing off against Ghetsis. He chose to fight with this boy, Nate, and Ghetsis' plans were ruined once more. N doesn't know where Ghetsis may have gone or what happened to him after this, but he is oddly conflicted about his feelings concerning the man he once called father. He hates what Ghetsis did, how he had lied, and that he views Pokémon as weapons, but a part of him can't help but remember all the times the man helped him. The child in him still desperately hopes that somehow Ghetsis might change, as futile as it truly is.
Not long following this battle, N came to know Nate a little better and decided to consider him a friend. The fact that the boy reminded him of Black was both something he appreciated and disliked. While the memory made him happy, he was also acutely aware that this boy was not in fact Black and could never replace him. Thus, N decided that more than anything else, he would like to find Zekrom's hero again and thank him for all that he had done for him.
N barely knew where to begin, but started by combing the region for him despite information that the boy had left it. After months of disappointment, he was just about to consider searching somewhere far away when the moment of reunion finally arrived. Black had come home to visit, through his friends met Nate, and Nate told him around where he had last seen N.
It turned out the reason that Black left Unova to begin with was because he had wanted to find N, too. The boy ended up being the one to track down N before N could track down him, and he was startled to realize Black had gone to such trouble to find him. He found himself even happier than he thought he would be to see him, and a friendship between them soon after became 'official.'
N thoroughly enjoyed the boy's company on friendlier terms and spent time with him frequently over the next month. Though there were awkward moments while they were still becoming used to one another, N found his company pleasant, and felt a boost in his mood when they shared a good day together. N's attachment to the boy has since only furthered, and a certain Gardevoir of his finds something about his bond with Black amusing enough to giggle about that she won't explain.
When winter arrived, Black insisted that N come and stay at his home, at the very least until things warmed up again. N was at first unsure about accepting the generous offer, but he was eventually persuaded into it and came to live with him since he lacks a home of his own.
Appearance: [x] N is 5"11 and slightly underweight for his height. His eyes are gray, despite occasionally appearing a hint blue or green in certain lighting.
Though he may have a pretty face, his body is not as attractive as one may imagine. It is pale, thin, and littered with scars of various shapes and sizes received primarily by frightened or upset Pokémon he tried caring for in the past.
He is usually somewhat unkempt as a habit acquired from traveling without a home, but not to the point of becoming unhygienic. His hair has grown a few inches longer, frequently a mess, and he often wears the same outfit, as he owns very few items of clothing.
Pokémon:
Reshiram Quiet/Proud of its power
Reshiram has a regal, majestic air to him and a mighty presence. He is intelligent, powerful and quite aware of this fact. While very proud and even slightly vain, he is also quiet and not one to boast unless challenged. The dragon is incredibly loyal to N, and while he helps to guide his trainer he will often leave important decision making up to him because he puts complete trust into the choices the man makes. He is not there to tell N what to do, but rather advise him and speak with him whenever he struggles to see something clearly.
Although N may have lost the battle against Zekrom, Reshiram continues to consider his trainer a hero ever since he proved himself worthy at Dragonspiral Tower. Their partnership started off somewhat formal in the beginning, but the two of them bonded closely over the past several years. Reshiram was always there to provide comfort N needed after they were defeated and left Team Plasma. Reshiram is encouraging towards him and reassures N whenever the man is lost or frustrated, reminding him that he will discover the right thing to do and find the answers he seeks in time.
Reshiram grew so attached to N that he is fiercely protective of him. While N allows him freedom like he does all his Pokémon, it is the dragon's choice never to go far for long. He is normally very patient if N requests he wait outside somewhere while he goes in, but if there's any reason for him to be concerned, he'll insist that N take him with in a pokéball, despite the man's dislike for them. Otherwise, he quickly becomes impatient and restless if there is a potential danger and he cannot be right by N's side.
If his trainer is hurt or seriously threatened, Reshiram may fly into a rage and has no qualms about destroying anything that gets in the way of him helping N. He has a bit of a vengeful, merciless side to him drawn out if ever something particularly horrible happens to his partner. The fury of the dragon type in his blood can be seen very clearly when he is angry, and N is about the only one able to calm him when he becomes like this. He is a force to be reckoned with, and certainly feared if N is not present to bring a halt to his destructive side.
At one point following their journey of two years, it was N's wish that Reshiram accompany Nate. It upset him greatly to leave N behind, but he did as his friend requested in helping out this new trainer in any way he could. The dragon remained with him for several months without ever making an attempt to change anyone's mind, but Nate felt uncomfortable keeping him from N and eventually told Reshiram to return to him. The Pokémon hesitated to leave, and had even developed a fondness for Nate, but was happy to rejoin his former companion. N was surprised, but informed by the dragon that it was his own wish to stay, and that their journey of pursuing the truth together was far from over. They have since remained partners.
As far as Reshiram's treatment towards anyone else N meets, he is fairly neutral by default. He holds a great respect for Black in particular, both because the boy bested him in battle and because he proved himself 'worthy' by earning Zekrom's loyalty. This respect even extends to the point where he would be relatively accepting of obeying him if circumstances called for it and N was not around.
Where other Pokémon are concerned, Reshiram gets along with them for the most part but isn't above asserting his dominance if he is provoked. He's been known to get into small spats with Zoroark, but it has never involved any actual fighting; mostly harsh growling and words as well as intimidating body language. Reshiram isn't fond of Zoroark's attitude and the way he acts at times, but accepts and tolerates him because he is a close friend of N's.
Reshiram is genderless and doesn't care whether someone calls him 'he' or 'she,' but N always uses male pronouns when referring to him. The dragon typically displays masculine qualities over feminine ones, but can show an almost maternal sort of affection towards N at times.
Zoroark M/Rash/Thoroughly cunning
Zoroark met N as Zorua when they were both very young; he was brought to the boy by Ghetsis, who claimed that the Pokémon's mother was killed by a human. Although initially jittery and scared of N, when he realized that the boy genuinely cared for him, he gradually began to warm up. It wasn't long until the two were practically inseparable.
Much like his trainer, his innocence and wariness of humans were used against him. The two of them were both conditioned to harbor a strong dislike towards humanity, and after being fed lie after lie and enduring many a painful experience, he grew to trust absolutely nobody but N. Even those in Team Plasma, the ones on 'their side,' he disliked as well; Ghetsis, he loathes most of all for the way he treated N.
Zoroark is ridiculously protective of N and willing to do just about anything for him. This includes lengths that are sometimes frightening and reckless, as well as putting up with the few humans that N has taken a liking to. However, this tolerance should not be mistaken for friendship, even when he is willing to protect one of these individuals with his life. Such action is rarely for any reason other than the fact he does not want his trainer to be hurt by their loss.
He has the tendency to become jealous of anyone else that receives a good amount of N's attention, but he doesn't like to admit or show it. This was something that began way back when he felt like he was competing with the Zorua N had known growing up in the wild. (He was secretly glad when that Zorua eventually joined Nate.)
Much to N's discomfort and in stark contrast with the man's own philosophies, Zoroark is rather brutal and ruthless when he battles. It would appear that he uses it as an opportunity to release pent up hatred and frustration that still continues to fester in him. While N may have been willing to reconsider his views on humanity and was open to a change of heart, Zoroark struggles in doing the same. Though Zoroark is loyal, N has had a very difficult time trying to get him to see the good in others that he himself opened his eyes to. This causes his trainer a great deal of worry and sadness, but N would never consider for a moment giving up on him.
Zoroark is typically unfriendly, overall. Around others he'll be a silent, dark presence unless addressed. Despite this, the Pokémon can display a surprising amount of affection and playfulness towards N. He seems almost entirely unlike himself when he's with his trainer and in a good mood, melting into cuddles and nuzzles for him. It is evidence that some of the fox's gentle and loving side have been retained somewhere inside him, from a time before he was hurt. He is not a bad Pokémon, but rather a deeply troubled one. Though he may act mean and threatening, he wouldn't hurt a hair on the head of anyone that N cares about.
His favored human illusion is that of a strong, tall man with dark hair, the same bright turquoise eyes, and a hint of a wild look to him. It is his intention to look intimidating and unapproachable in this form. Both this illusion and his true form roughly match N's height when he stands up straight, as he is slightly larger than the average of his species.
At one point, N tried to convince Zoroark to join a pack in the wild, but the Pokémon flat out refused to leave him and told him he considered N to be his family.
Clarice F/Bashful/Often lost in thought
N met Clarice as a Kirlia during his travels with Reshiram between the time he left and returned to Unova. She apparently once had a trainer before he found her, but had been abandoned by him. According to Clarice's story, her trainer had been a good man when they first became a team, but took a turn for the worse several years later and began thief work out of desperation. Though he had remained kind to her for the most part, he grew frustrated because she was too sensitive to help him out with his job, and too weak to win many battles. Due to her species' empathetic abilities, she was heavily affected by these negative emotions and grew depressed and withdrawn.
Her trainer began to realize this, and one day declared that it was for her own good that they part ways; he didn't want to be her master if he only brought her misery. Clarice protested, as Kirlia grow extremely attached to their trainers, but he wouldn't take no for an answer and left her. He truly intended to do this for his old friend's benefit, but Clarice was heartbroken and constantly dwelled on their past and all the good times that they shared together, after he was gone.
When N first came across her, sad and alone, she was nervous and didn't care much to talk to him. He visited to make attempts to speak with her often, however, and slowly earned her trust. She eventually came to the decision that she would join N, but first asked him if he ever intended to release her in the future. Witnessing firsthand how heavily affected a Pokémon could be after losing its trainer, he promised her that she would never have to leave so long as it was her desire to stay.
The name Clarice had been bestowed upon the Pokémon by her previous trainer, so she requested that N use this nickname, to which he agreed. Over time, her emotional wounds began to heal; strengthened by this, she flourished and eventually evolved into a Gardevoir.
N has learned a lot from Clarice about a Pokémon's relationship with a human, due to the fact that Gardevoirs by nature are so attached and loyal to their trainers that they are willing to sacrifice their own lives for them. It was the perfect example to further prove to him that many Pokémon feel much happier living with a trainer as opposed to living in the wild, and that losing a close bond like that has the potential to destroy them.
Clarice is a very timid, shy Pokémon towards those she is not accustomed to. She is soft spoken, gentle, and comforting to her friends. Because she can feel the emotions of people and Pokémon around her, she is extremely sensitive and affected easily by everyone else's moods, especially N's. This power also serves as a great help to N in better understanding Pokémon he meets, because Clarice can to describe to him how they are feeling.
She is excellent at offering N advice and helping him sort out any emotional conflicts he is struggling with. She acts very motherly over him and is quite enthusiastic and encouraging towards his attempts at forging meaningful relationships with other humans.

Others: N knows several Pokémon that frequently come and go. He can call upon them for aid if they're nearby, (they live scattered about Unova,) and sometimes may take them with him on travels.
