Caitlin
Female - 21 - Elite Four
Personality
Caitlin has matured drastically since she was the head of the Battle Castle. Though still keeping others at arm's length and being bitterly austere when she chooses to be, her hot temper and forthright attitude gradually died down into a more calm, if bitingly aloof, personality. She's become much more of a princess, so to speak.
One noticeable change is that she's now much more introspective and thoughtful. Caitlin rarely holds contempt for those who best her; likewise, she stays modest and humble if she beats someone. She prefers to reflect upon the battle itself and see how she could improve, or how her strategy managed to overpower her opponent, rather than letting the adrenaline take hold of her emotions and cause her powers to potentially cause harm. The art of stillness was the one that has kept her from any major outbursts or breakdowns -- it's essential to keeping her position as an Elite Four member. Not only that, it's given her a few friends.
Caitlin prides herself on her aptitude both in and out of battle. While her psychic abilities don't have a whole lot of uses in Pokémon battling, being more destructive than commodious, her natural intelligence and experience in the harshness of Sinnoh and Unova have given her insight into the depths of battling. Although her lazy, casual nature tends to make her opponents underestimate her, she is a foe to be reckoned with.
Her arrogance, impatience, and icy persona still shows. Caitlin prefers riveting battles over boring ones, like most of the other Elite Four members. Strong opponents not only grant her a source of entertainment and excitement, but they also allow her to improve. Being denied of this and offered only a quick, easy battle doesn't sit quite well with her, and she'll show it. Inexperienced trainers commonly get the brunt of her snide remarks; only when they offer her a challenge do they get to see her more agreeable side.
Caitlin rarely bothers to form deep or complex relationships with others. Having the title of Elite Four (and being the former head of the Battle Castle) plastered all over her gives her plenty of fans, though few real friends. This alienation makes her shrink away from most people; nonetheless, she is truly interested in finding friends and people to battle with. And she does have a few near and dear associates -- namely, the other three members of the E4 she deals with on a daily basis. Alder, Iris, and Cynthia are also close to her as well, the latter being a role model for Caitlin. Cynthia continually beats Caitlin no matter the time or place. Years ago, that would have been a source of outrage for her... now, she considers it a gift.
Backstory
Caitlin's parents never expected their only daughter to become such a powerful psychic. While it was deep in the family bloodline, the last person who was deemed psychic had long since passed on. Her relatives had hoped that their "curse" had finally left the family tree -- however, it had just skipped a few generations. Nobody was prepared for Caitlin and her unstable, tumultuous powers.
As a young child, she was spoiled rotten, a misguided attempt to sate her emotions and keep her from acting out. If Caitlin wanted a new Pokémon, she got one. If she wanted a new bed, no problem. If she wanted a larger room, no big deal. But friends... were especially difficult to come by. It's not that she was antisocial -- she was simply unwound much easier than other people her age. If something didn't go her way, she'd get angry; her powers would unleash and result in others getting hurt. Caitlin was a scary person. She wasn't different. She was dangerous.
Soon, she was expelled from school and spent the rest of her childhood fairly isolated from the rest of society. Caitlin's parents considered her to be a lost cause, focusing more on work and social outings than their maladjusted little esper. Pokémon began acting as substitutes when she could no longer talk to people. She grew particularly attached to Psychic-types and began training them solely, thinking of a future in which she could become a better psychic and a better trainer.
Living in the Resort Area of the Battle Zone gave her the opportunity to train in the fiercest terrain around Sinnoh. The island being dedicated to Pokémon battling, Caitlin grew into a well-rounded trainer despite still holding her naivete and overbearing haughtiness. She quickly made a name for herself around the island and was offered a position at the Battle Frontier. She gladly obliged, eager to show off her skills to the rest of the island. Things went smoothly until she lost a battle. Her psychic powers unleashed our of sheer anger, pent up after months of repressing them, and amounted to some serious collateral damage. Needless to say, the rest of the Frontier Brains were not pleased.
She almost lost her position until Darach, an eccentric though well-meaning man, offered to battle for her while she would deal with the grand scheme of the Battle Castle. A bit hesitant though also incredibly grateful, she accepted, and the two became a fierce duo. Darach fought and she commanded him every step of the way, the combination decimating the competition. The Castle Valet and the Lady -- they were unstoppable.
But Caitlin grew bored. When she grows bored, things have to change.
So she left, once again, to greener pastures. There was a hasty goodbye as she went off on her own to Unova, a region full of history, tough trainers, and, more importantly, Psychic-types. (After years of watching Darach battle for her, she still loved that type.) Caitlin started out years before Hilbert and Hilda, travelling and training her Pokémon alone. It was challenging. Having no assistance and nobody to rely on was difficult at first, but she grew adjusted to the Trainer lifestyle and even grew to appreciate the hordes of people that had come to battle Darach on a daily basis. She grew accustomed to crippling losses and effortless wins; slowly, Caitlin was finally able to mature a bit as a person.
She took down the eight Gyms, slowly but surely, and soon reached the Elite Four. By then, she was an entirely different person: poised, proper, and in full control of her psychic abilities. She was confident and ready to win.
She lost, of course. Badly.
But she was given a better choice than just beating the Elite Four; she could become one of them. Her mastery of Psychic-types and her elegant style of battling was enough to seal the deal. Being Caitlin, she accepted immediately, refusing to look back on her decision. Though initially it was challenging to go up against hardened, accomplished trainers fresh out of Victory Road, Caitlin handled them with the skill of an wise sovereign. Before long, she was finally recognized as the graceful master of Psychic-types and became just as renowned and feared as the rest of them.
She, too, finally found a place she could call home.
